Chapter 28
Even while struggling to breathe, Garin cursed himself for letting his emotions get the better of him. When Jacob had moved out of the chair, it should have been a warning that the mage was up to something. But the conversation had enraged Garin to the point that he had been blind to the impending danger.
Grabbing Mattie and trying to protect her had come from instinct alone. An action that had almost been futile; the multitude of hot ashes from the fireplace were everywhere, burning his throat and sinuses. Then someone had attempted to yank the woman from his arms, and he had responded by punching the villain. Even blinded, his fist had found the right target and had connected with the mage’s jaw. If Garin had been able to breathe, the resulting sound of pain from Jacob would have been more than satisfying.
Suddenly, the assault ceased. A slight summer’s breeze almost chilled Garin to the bone even as the weight of the smoke lifted. His worry that he only heard one other person take in a struggling breath was short-lived. Attention swiftly shifted when his chest felt like it was going to split wide open as a racking cough hit him. Mattie too was struggling to get the fresh air into her lungs, so he moved to give her room once he had the chance. Then a new round of painful hacks had him landing on his hands and knees again.
“Your lungs will hurt for a while, children, as they rid themselves of smoke.” a man’s voice said despondently. “I’m sorry I wasn’t able to get you away from him as soon as Lynette told me you were here, but my thrice-cursed son needed to be distracted in order for me to perform the spell undetected.”
Garin took a glance behind him despite the fact he just couldn’t seem to stop choking for air. He wasn’t sure whether or not to be angry with the man who was sitting on a midnight blue chair. His hair was grayer and the craggy face more wrinkled than Garin remembered, but there was little doubt that their rescuer was the true lord of this manor, Jonas Gunderson.
“Where are our friends?” wheezed Mattie before she spat a large glob of black onto the floor.
“In the kitchen on the other side of the mansion. Don’t worry, Lynette will keep an eye on them until they recover. Hopefully by placing you on opposite sides of this maze, it will take awhile before Jacob discovers anyone’s location,” The man then had an impish look on his face. “Though, if he must, a part of me hopes he finds them first. There is no fury more vengeful than that of a Loganach’s.”
Mattie made a harsh sound of agreement just as Garin suffered a short coughing fit that felt like it had broken his ribs. Once his lungs had quieted down enough, he managed to clear his throat enough to demand, “And what makes you believe we have
